I love to read. In the average year I read about 100 books. Despite that, when Tessa suggested that we do a read along, it took me less than 2 seconds to suggest Generous Justice. As we have reread it, discussed it and started to prepare blogs about it, I’ve fallen even more in love with with this book. I’m excited that over the next two months we get to explore this book and the ideas in it. I hope that you will join us.

WHY THIS BOOK?

There’s a few reasons why we chose this book to concentrate on:

  1. God cares about justice

The Hebrew word for justice (mishpat) occurs 200 times in the Old Testament. In Psalms 68, God introduces himself as the ‘father to the fatherless, a defender of widows.’ As Keller says ’This is one of the main things He does in the world. He identifies with the powerless. He takes up their cause.’ As those made in His image, so should we.

  2. Timothy Keller is a great writer

I’ll be honest, while I love to read, I’m not so big on books that require deep thinking just to understand each sentence. Despite taking on theology and challenging topics, this book is easy to read.

  3. Generous Justice is comprehensive

This short book covers everything from ‘do we see Justice in the New Testament’ to ‘what if the person who needs help doesn’t deserve it.’ Keller hasn’t avoided the hard topics but gets really practical in terms of what it really means. Do we have to help everyone? Can we help everyone?

  4. It examines justice through a biblical lens

Timothy Keller does an amazing job of looking at justice while never drawing on the tools of guilt and pity. It made me want to cheer. He lays out a comprehensive explanation of why we should be involved based on God’s generous justice towards us, not the sad facts and figures of the world.

  5. It’s written for those who are passionate about justice and those who are skeptical

There’s space for everyone in this book. You don’t have to love justice. You don’t have to love Christianity. It’s written for a wide audience of people willing to find out what the Bible says.

  6. I’m passionate about justice

Okay, that’s not really a reason why we chose the book. But as an organisation we are passionate about justice. We want to see the wrongs of the world righted. We wanted to share that passion with you.

JOIN US

We would love to have you join us as we go through this read along. Each week we will be exploring one chapter. On Mondays we will have an overview of the chapter and then Wednesday and Friday we will explore some of the topics that Tim Keller touched on in that chapter. Even if you choose not to read the book each blog post should be easy to understand.  If you want to join in the discussion, share what insights you found in each chapter, we would love to hear and learn from you as well.
